- November 1936 - The BBC was the first broadcaster in the world to provide a high definition television service.
- January 1948 - News came to the television service. The BBC Newsreel gave the days events in a line of short reports.
- July 1948 - The Olympic Games were televised for the first time.
- July 1949 - Weather forecasts were televised.
- June 1953 - The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was televised.
- April 1972 - The start of Newsround. Newsround was a news bulletin for children.
- November 1997 - The start of The BBC News 24 Channel. This was the BBC's second 24 hour news station.
